18 // No Place Like Home: How does Shepard feel about Earth?

Lena’s feelings about Earth are extremely mixed, and for good reason.

On the one hand, Earth is the origin of all humanity. A place where the roots run deep and slightly tangled but no less beautiful because of it. Home to 11 billion people, most of which will likely never set foot off planet. Sure, there are bound to be some places that aren’t perfect, but no planet is ever truly perfect and there are definitely still some amazing places in the world.

But on the other hand, it seems that only great tragedy brings her to Earth. Her first time there was in the wake of the attack on Mindoir, and she lived in the States for almost two years before finally enlisting. Her second time on Earth was in the wake of the Skyllian Blitz, for N7 School in Rio de Janeiro. And her third trip? The Bahak system. Aratoht. Six months in Alliance custody before the Reapers finally invaded. Her final trip to Earth doesn’t even need to be mentioned.

So for her, Earth is a symbol of many things, but only tragedy has ever brought her to its soil and she doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.

17 // Among Ancestors: What is Shepard’s racial ancestry? Do they feel closely linked with their cultural identity?

Lena’s racial ancestry is mostly European. French, Czech, English, a little Irish and some German in there somewhere. She doesn’t feel particularly connected to this ancestry - she was born on Mindoir and thinks of herself as being culturally from the colony first and foremost. In fact, if anyone asked her specifically about her ancestry and pressed her for a solid answer, she’d refer to herself as a European mutt.

She understand why some people put such a heavy emphasis on their culture in their life, but she never felt the need to go digging up information on long-dead ancestors when she had plenty of living family members living around her. And even after they died, she’s of the opinion that it’s best to leave the dead to rest.

(Polyplectron napoleonis)

is a pheasant of the family (phasianidae). they can be found on a single island in the Philippines, Palawan island (thus the name). they are a medium size bird growing up to 50cm long, their most distinguishing characteristic is their plumage, as they have highly iridescent blue feathers on their backs and with peacock like ocelli on their tail feathers (thus the name peacock pheasant. females are smaller than the male and are less colorful. (as the male uses his plumage for mating). due to habitat loss, hunting and limited habitat range they are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.

16 // Fire and Ice: Paragon or Renegade? Why?

Lena is overwhelmingly Paragon. She believes in doing the right thing, and she doesn’t accept cutting corners in order to do it. Adopting the enemy’s methods makes her no better than the enemy, after all. And she certainly isn’t going to let fear lead her into making the wrong choices. That’s why she tried to warn Aratoht rather that calling for a pickup for herself. It’s why she destroyed the Collector Base rather than risking the technology there going on to result in further atrocities.

But being a Paragon doesn’t mean she hasn’t made the occasional Renegade choice. She’s headbutted a couple krogan in her time, taken some opportunistic shots, coaxed a certain Yeoman to change her identity rather than risk being found by Cerberus, and even made a tango with a certain turian a little racier than it strictly needed to be. (While still keeping her eyes solely on him, that is.)
